MADURAI: The Post Graduate and Research Department of Zoology of Yadava College in Madurai had organized ‘Butterfly Watching’ for zoology students of the college in order to create more awareness about the importance of butterflies for protecting biodiversity.
Zoology students took part in this butterfly biodiversity audit on September 27th 2024, and went around the lush green campus to record the various species and varieties of butterflies and they were guided by Mr.M.Rajesh, Assistant Professor from The American College here, who was invited as resource person.
“There are about 150 species of butterflies and each variety has a different colour and characteristic. Through the butterfly watching and count done in Yadava College campus today, we will be able to know how many species are here. Students must remember that butterflies and honeybees are important for pollination and thereby for food production. The month of September is observed as Big Butterfly month….The message we convey today is that 70 per cent of food crops are pollinated by butterflies and honeybees,” Mr.M.Rajesh had explained.
Dr.C.Raju, Principal in-charge of Yadava College and event coordinator Dr.Rajkumar Gurusamy were among those present at the start of butterfly watching tour in the college campus today morning-September 27th 2024.
