Solar boost from Gangaikondan railway station in Tamil Nadu; Container train operations get green signal

MADURAI: Container train operations had commenced at Gangaikondan railway station in Tamil Nadu in the Madurai Division of Southern Railway on September 26th 2024 giving a boost top the solar energy sector in that region.

“From September 26th 2024, container train operations commenced from Gangaikondan by TCI CONCOR Multimodal Solutions Pvt Ltd. This new service will cater to the logistics needs of TATA Power Solar Ltd which is a major manufacturer of solar panels based at Gangaikondan in Tirunelveli district in Tamil Nadu, and it is the country’s largest single location solar cell and module plant,” a press release received from the railways has informed in Madurai yesterday.

This introduction of container train loading at Gangaikondan railway station marks a significant milestone for the Madurai Division of Southern Railway as it provides more efficient cost-effective transporting of solar panels from the manufacturing facility to various destinations across the country like Deshnok, Nagalapalle, Indore, Ludhiana, Lakholi etc., the railway press release informed,

Tata Power Solar manufacturing plant is located 3.5 kms from Gangaikondan station and hence rail transportation is a viable option for the company and it potentially leads to continuous flow of traffic to the Railways, the press release added.

“This new facility will significantly contribute to the Madurai Division of Southern Railway in achieving its annual freight loading target of 3.4 million tonnes for financial year 2024-25. It strengthens rail connectivity and facilitates more track for trade and commerce through railway, it is a boost to local economy for new jobs etc in the Gangaikondan region,” the Madurai Division of Southern Railway has said.
