MADURAI: The Syndicate meeting of Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) which was attended by top higher education officials of the Tamil Nadu State Government via online mode on July 3rd 2026 took a few crucial decisions that will impact the colleges, MKU faculty and research scholars who are doing Ph.D from the varsity’s affiliated colleges.
Top sources in MKU told ‘Lotus Times’ media in Madurai today that the recognition fee for research centres of colleges that are affiliated to the MKU will be increased by 25 per cent and research centres of our university’s affiliated colleges will have to pay Rs.2 lakhs from the existing Rs.1.25 lakhs, according to MKU sources here today.
“We have tried our level best to reduce the research section fees for affiliated colleges of MKU that are paying the research recognition fees. It is now being increased by 25 per cent and there is a separate fee for re-renewal of the research centre recognition for these colleges. So, for a college research centre to start a Ph.D program in its campus, the recognition fee will be Rs.2 lakhs very soon to start a Ph.D program….The Research Committee of MKU had recommended to enhance 25 per cent of the existing fees for Ph.D,” according to MKU sources here today.
The 25 per cent fee hike from the existing fee for Ph.D scholars comes in various categories comes into effect immediately after the Syndicate approves the minutes of the meeting held on last Friday- July 3rd 2026- and it was attended by the top officials of higher education department, MKU Registrar and the concerned department officers, sources added.
Affiliated colleges will have to pay re-renewal fee for Ph.D centre renewal and this decision taken at the Syndicate meeting held on last Friday was contrary to the request of a few Syndicate members and colleges, sources said in Madurai on July 6th 2026.
However, some fees for MKU campus for Ph.D scholars has been reduced and it will be officially announced by the university soon, sources said.
DISCIPLINARY ACTION:
“Some enquiry committee reports were in the agenda of MKU Syndicate meeting held on July 3rd 2026. A few faculty members of our university including Mr.Velankanni Joseph, Mr.Arokiadoss and Mr.Asokan were having enquiry committees on them for various allegations. The enquiry committee reports were placed in this Syndicate meeting and the recommendation was that further steps must be taken to frame charges against them based on the enquiry committee’s investigation reports from MKU campus. A serious discussion took place in the Syndicate meeting, but everything depends on the final minutes copy that will be circulated to MKU Syndicate members and to the IAS officers. Whether the charges will be framed or not against these three faculty members of our university will be known in a day or two because the MKU Registrar is going to Chennai today to meet the Commissioner of Higher Education and senior officials in Chennai for the Syndicate decisions,” MKU sources told ‘Lotus Times’ in Madurai on July 6th 2026 while expressing their fears that the final minutes of the Syndicate meeting cannot be guessed until it is given in print to the Syndicate members and MKU authorities.
