Smile is a very good anti-depressant for mental health: Alagappa University’s special event suggests stress-relief tips for emotional strength

MADURAI: Experienced psychologist and counselling department coordinator at Athma Mind Care Hospital in Tiruchi Mr.K.Soundar has today emphasized on the importance of just one smile for ensuring mental health.

“Smile is your anti-depressant. Just smile and it brings a positive energy. Speak openly about your problems and seek professional help when needed. Remember always that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is bringing new challenges also for its impact on mental health, and so the youth must strike a healthy balance between the emerging new technology and human connections. So, the smile from your gives the mental relief as an anti-depressant,” Mr.K.Soundar has suggested today in his thematic address at World Mental Health Day 2025 program at Karaikudi.

The Department of Social Work, Alagappa University Social Work Association (AUSWA) and Department of Special Educaiton and Rehabilitation Science of Alagppa University had organized a special awareness event in the university campus at Karikudi on October 25th 2025 to commmorate the World Mental Helath Day which is observed on October 10th every year.

Prof.G.Ravi, Vice-Chancellor of Alagappa University-Karaikudi, had stressed on the point that a healthy body leads to a healthy mind and hence there is an interconnection between physical and mental health of eevry person.

This program was conducted in collaboration with District Mental Health Programme of Sivaganga District and ATHMA Hospital in Tiruchi.

Prof.S.Rajaram, university Syndicate Member and Dean-Faculty of Arts, Dr.MA.Velusamy, Professor and Head in-charge, Department of Social Work-Alagappa University and Mr.J.Vignesh Sabarikaran, teaching assistant, Department of Social Work, were among those who had motivated the students by speaking in willpower, access to mental health services, mental health emergencies and the steps needed to promote mental healthcare among today’s youth through holistic education that is committed to physical and mental wellbeing.
