How Gandhian economics helps modern India?: Experts explain the essence of Mahatma model

MADURAI: The School of Economics of Kumaraguru College of Liberal Arts and Science in Coimbatore had organized a symposium on ‘Gandhian Economic Thought: Pathways for Sustainable and Inclusive Growth in Modern India’ at Kumaraguru Campus in Kovai on September 25th 2025.

Thought leaders, scholars, faculty and students had an opportunity to revisit Mahatma Gandhi’s economic philosophy in the context of contemporary India.

Dr.Dhananjay Rai, Associate Professor, Gandhian Thought & Peace Studies, Central University of Gujarat at Gandhinagar, had delivered the keynote address by emphasizing on the relevance of Gandhian Economic Thought for India’s inclusive growth because Gandhiji’s vision had prioritized the ‘standard of life’ over the commonly used ‘standard of living’, according to a press release.

There was a panel discussion moderated by Dr.Smruti Ranjan Dhal from Gujarat Central University to explore the Gandhian economics with experts including Dr.P.Arunachalam, Fellow, Indian Institute of Advanced Study-Shimla, Dr.K.Manikandan, Associate Professor, Department of Economics, Gandhigram Rural Institute-Dindigul, Dr.C.Muthuraja, former Head, Department of Economics, American College-Madurai and Dr.S.R.Keshava, Senior Professor of Economics, Postgraduate Department of Economics, Bangalore University.

The participants in this panel discussion spoke on equal distribution of resources, common welfare, reducing over consumption, peace economics, ideal village and Gandhiji’s trusteeship model as a solution to poverty, the press release added.
