MADURAI: The prestigious Thiagarajar College of Engineering (TCE) in Madurai is soon making a foray into space by launching a satellite through a focused initiative named ‘Operation Boomithran’ which will take the guidance of space experts who are its alumnus.

“Our college is geared up towards launching a sustainable satellite that will be useful for electric vehicles applications and biosensors etc. The ‘Operation Boomithran’ project is funded by the TCE management and our distinguished alumnus who worked in the field of space technology will guide us in this satellite launch which we want to do in two years time,”Dr.L.Ashok Kumar, TCE Principal, has said at the Founder’s Day event held in the college campus here today-July 29th 2025.

The TCE Space Club will spearhead the satellite project by involving its faculty and students while its renowned alumnus including Mr.Nambi Narayanan and Dr.A.Sivathanu Pillai will provide guidance for the space foray.

“What we propose is a wooden satellite and we want to encourage space innovations ideas. Totally 45 students from various engineering branches of our college will be selected to work along with the faculty in this project. Already, TCE has signed a MoU with Indian Technology Congress in this regard and we will take the support of our alumni who worked in ISRO and in various space technology missions,” Dr.L.Ashok Kumar has said.
