MADURAI: Lok Sabha MP Mr.S.Venkatesan had today strongly objected the tender issued by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India inviting private CA firms to assist the CAG in the audit of public sector companies and local bodies.
On June 3rd 2025, he wrote a letter to President of India Mrs.Droupadi Murmu urging for her immediate intervention to withdraw this move because “the decision of CAG to invite private Chartered Accountant firms will dilute the independence of CAG and the principles envisaged by the Constitution”.
The Madurai Lok Sabha MP has said that CAG tender is a huge shock because there is a danger that confidential and sensitive information held by the public sector firms and local bodies may fall into private hands.
“As per the tender issued by CAG, the private CA firms are expected to work alongside audit officers in carrying out the audit of public sector companies and local bodies. The CAG which is highest auditing authority in India was established by the Constitution and CAG is accountable only to the Parliament. The audit conducted by chartered accountants is not the same as CAG audit. The point to be remembered is that CAG and his or her audit department are the guardians of the financial interests of the people of India,” Mr.S.Venkatesan has said in his letter which was released to the media today.
He observed that inviting private CA firms to conduct audits involving thousands of crores of rupees is a violation of the Constitutional mandate given to the CAG which was granted independent status to ensure that the audit work is done without any political interference “and for the CAG to invite private parties goes against the principles of the Constitution and and this tender move is highly dangerous and I feel that the distinct and independent nature of CAG department must be protected and public finances need to be safeguarded.”
