
MADURAI: The temple city of Madurai is getting ready to witness a rare celestial phenomenon on September 7th 2025 in the form of a total lunar eclipse which is said as ‘Blood Moon’ because the colour that is seen during the totality of this eclipse.
To create a larger public awareness about this total lunar eclipse and how the general public can see the ‘Blood Moon’ from their terrace, the members of Tamil Nadu Science Forum-Madurai district committee is holding special programs for teachers, students and public to view the Blood Moon and witness it from their terrace or open ground in clear sky.
“The lunar eclipse starts by 9.58 pm on September 7th 2025 as a rare celestial phenomenon called Blood Moon and it ends at 1 am on the next day. Totality of this lunar eclipse will start by 11 pm with a peak viewing at 11.41 pm and go up to 12.22 am….. the eclipse leaves by 1.26 am on September 8th early hours….This can be witnessed all over India and it will next happen again in December 2028 only,” Prof.Dr.P.Rajamanickam of Tamil Nadu Science Forum-Madurai District unit, has informed today.
Lunar eclipse is a celestial phenomenon wherein the Sun, Earth and Moon comes in straight line and so the earth blocks the fall of light on moon. The Earth comes in between Sun and Moon and blocks the Sun rays falling on the Moon, Prof.Dr.P.Rajamanickam has said.
The Tamil Nadu Science Forum in Madurai district is conducting a special awareness session at MUTA Hall in Madurai Kakka Thoppu Street here on September 5th 2025 from 4 pm onwards by inviting science communication experts to give public information about this lunar eclipse. Associate Professor S.Sivaramakrishnan will give details about the ‘Blood Moon’ while Dr.M.Rajesh, district president of Tamil Nadu Science Forum, will preside over the awareness event which focuses on taking a ‘SELFIE WITH BLOOD MOON’ from your own terrace and dine with family and friends on September 7th 2025 from 10 pm onwards.
In tomorrow’s meeting on September 5th 2025, there will be other science experts including K.Malarselvi and P.Sivaraman who will guide the participants about lunar eclipse and how public programmes to witness the total lunar eclipse at various places is bsing organized with telescopes and binoculars by involving the general public especially the students, Prof.P.Rajamanickam has said today.
