MADURAI: A petition against the Principal in-charge of Madurai Kamaraj University College here Dr.B.George has been submitted to top Tamil Nadu Government officials and university authorities urging them for immediate action to save the academic environment in college campus and the future existence of MKU College at Alagarkoil Road in Madurai.
With more than 50 signatures taken from consolidated teaching staff and students, the complaint letter dated July 4th 2025 was sent to Madurai Kamaraj University Syndicate members and also to education department top officials in Chennai a few days back demanding a thorough probe into a few serious issues that are happening in the MKU College campus in Madurai.
A copy of the petition was sent to ‘Lotus Times‘ media here today highlighting the three issues that need to be addressed by the government officials and MKU authorities because the signatories had pointed out that the safety of students need immediate attention.
DRUG ADDICTS IN CAMPUS?:
The most serious issue that is concerning the teaching staff of MKU College in Madurai is the insecure feeling among a few girls after some issues happened about the presence of a few drug addicts and liquor addicts among students in afternoon shift.
“Drugs, ganja, narcotics etc is threatening our college reputation right now. Just a few days back, a girl student went to a police station in Madurai city and lodged a police complaint. The Principal in-charge Dr.B.George has miserably failed to handle issues within the campus, and instead he is asking the affected girls to go to police station when students told him about drugs addicts in our campus, ” a few teaching staff told ‘Lotus Times’ on July 9th 2025.
Following the signed petition sent by college staff, the MKU has started official enquiry into the drugs-narcotics- ganja-liquor addicts issue in MKU College campus and the senior Syndicate member Prof.B.Mayil Vahanan had called the Principal yesterday and he conducted the first round of enquiry into the girl student’s complaint to Madurai city police.
“The second round of enquiry is on July 11th 2025 in the university campus. Syndicate members and a few senior officials of MKU are worried about the significant drop in students admissions this academic year. Last year, we had 1,490 UG admissions and this year we have only 1,100. The net effect is a revenue loss of about Rs.2 crores for our college,” according to a few persons who signed the petition expressing their agony.
The unilateral decision to close sociology course without proper reason, absence of a strong leadership to handle campus issues and the frequent incidents of clashes among some students in the afternoon shift because of their drug addiction are the three points that were taken to the attention of Tamil Nadu High Education Secretary, Commissioner of Higher Education and university Syndicate members in the complaint letter against the present Principal in-charge Prof.B.George.
“George sir was handling the affairs of this college from 2019 to 2022. At that time, he mishandled the EPF issue and ultimately the Provident Fund Office had levied a huge penalty because the PF amount of staff was not paid in time to the EPF office in Madurai. The penalty our college had to pay to EPF office was about Rs.30 lakhs because of the delay,” according to teaching staff.
