MADURAI: The day should begin in a right way with healthy habits if young adults want to be brisk for whole day and do not feel tired. How is this possible in a easy way?
Mr.K.Soundar, Psychologist and Coordinator of Department of Counselling at Athma Mind Care Hospital in Trichy, has given some easy practical tips in a recent article written by him for his hospital bulletin where he explained about ‘brain fog’ and ‘scrolling effect’.
“In today’s digital world, we notice commonly that young adults in particular feel tired or bored and feel exhausted. They wake up very actively in the morning, but by 10 or 11 am, the mind feels exhausted. We feel sleepy and bored, and need something to restart. This condition is called ‘brain fog’ and it affects not only adults aged 18 to 40 years, but even the teenagers also,” Tiruchi-based psychologist Mr.K.Soundar had written in his article based on mindcare experience.
HOW TO PREVENT BRAIN FOG:?
He gave a few simple easy solutions to be followed daily to overcome brain fog. “Just think about the very first thing many of us do when we wake up. We pick up our phone and start scrolling. In fact, we do excessive scrolling…That single habit is enough to spoil the day and it takes a heavy toll because our brain starts the day overloaded with random and fast-changing content,” Mr.K.Soundar has explained in his article.
The good simple habit, he suggests, is not checking your phone as first thing in the morning. “It protects your brain, your mood and your energy levels. Even 30 seconds of scrolling after waking up can influence the brain for entire day. That is the impact your mobile phone scrolling has on you,” the mindcare expert’s article has said.
He says that most of the information we consume by mobile scrolling is unimportant but the brain doesn’t know that. “It still uses energy to process it. This drains your mental focus even before the day has begun. We struggle to concentrate, we feel heavier at work or studies, we feel mentally tired long before the day ends,” analyses Mr.K.Soundar.
HOW IT AFFECTS SLEEP AND ENERGY:
The impact of brain fog is so huge that it affects your sleep and energy when you go to bed. “During the day, you feel tired due to brain fog, but in the evening around 5 to 6 pm the brain starts to wakeup after your coffee, tea etc. The, after 10 pm the brain becomes active. We start thinking deeply, worrying, daydreaming or staying awake online sometimes till midnight or early hours of the day. This disrupts the circadian rhythm- the body’s natural sleep clock,” Mr.K.Soundar, psychologist at Athma Mind Care Hospital in Trichy, has said in his article.
For the common man, he cautions that when sleep becomes poor or irregular it affects the focus, memory and mood. “Anxiety and depression can increase overtime. In simple words, I say that a few seconds of morning scrolling today will drain your mental energy, causes brain fog, reduces your focus, disrupts sleep and makes the next day even more harder,” he added.
The final takeaway from psychologist Mr.K.Soundar’s article is that we should follow a simple habit, that is not checking the mobile phone as a first thing in the morning. His article analysis definitely makes us feel that we should follow this right message from today.
