MADURAI: Air Quality Index (AQI) and breathing troubles in national capital New Delhi. This has become the national issue now because of the alarming suffocation and health issues faced by people there. The same is now talked about Chennai city too. The much debated point now is about pollution levels, smog, Oxygen scarcity, environment dangers and future threats to Chennai. So, what is the solution to overcome pollution crisis in Chennai.

Prof.Dr.K.Muthuchelian, an expert in energy, environment, natural resources, bio-energy, plant sciences etc from Madurai in Tamil Nadu, who is now Pro-Vice Chancellor of Dayananda Sagar University in Bengaluru, Karnataka, spoke to ‘Lotustimes’ news website today on November 14th 2019.

“I have solutions to the authorities of Government of Tamil Nadu to prevent air quality dangers in our State. People’s cooperation too is essential for this to avoid Delhi-like dangerous pollution levels and have a healthy life. Things such as Oxygen showrooms in New Delhi should not happen here,” Dr.Muthuchelian, who was the Chairperson of School of Energy, Environment and Natural Resources of Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) and a former Vice-Chancellor of Periyar University in Salem, has said.

SOLUTIONS TO STOP CRISIS:

1. Introduce electric cars soon. 2. Introduce bicycles. 3. Abandon the old vehicles because they add more to pollution. 4. Factories and industrial units must be atleast 40 kms away from Chennai city. 5. Introduce bio-ethanaol based vehicles. 6. Reduce the use of fossil fuels.

“Delhi is now in a Red Alert mode for its air quality index and it is above 400 in the index……Our Chennai city is at 130 level now. The normal permissible level is from 0-50 only. If human beings and animals have to survive, we need to have good air quality. For instance in Kerala, in capital city Thiruvananthapuram the air quality pollution index is less than 40. It is very good there,” pollution control strategist Dr.K.Muthuchelian, had explained.

And, finally the environment expert has appealed to the authorities and people to focus more on ‘green cover’ by planting tree saplings wherever there is space because “trees are the only solution for our Oxygen and trees are the only solution.”
