MADURAI: Lok Sabha MP of Madurai Parliament constituency Mr.Su.Venkatesan had today expressed his deep anguish that the support of private banks in Madurai is very discouraging for students who are seeking education loans to pursue their dream higher education courses in colleges and universities in Tamil Nadu and outside.
“The PSU Govt nationalized banks are found to be more supportive for students to give education loans for their studies. So, withdraw /close the government accounts in those private banks which are not giving education loans to our deserving poor students from many families in urban and rural areas. All the Government institutions must start closing their bank accounts in private banks in Madurai district and in Tamil Nadu….they should be closed and withdrawn if they don’t give education loans which are aimed for socio-economic empowerment of families,” Madurai MP Mr.Su.Venkatesan had expressed his concern while speaking at ‘Education Loan Mela 2026’ organized by the district administration at Lady Doak College campus in Madurai today-September 21st 2026.
MADURAI TOPS IN INDIA:
The Lok Sabha MP Mr.Su.Venkatesan has said that Madurai district is at the top in national level for giving education loans to students and the target for this year for Madurai district is Rs.400 crores to be disbursed through banks by participation of Govt PSU and private banks.
“No student should be denied an education loan by a bank for want of collateral security, guarantee etc. Madurai is leading in helping our students with educational loans though banks. We want the Tamil Nadu State government and Modi government to waive off student education loans because banks are waiving off corporate loans in thousands of crores for industrialists etc. So, I am going to be tough towards private banks because their participation and support in giving loans is very meagre this year in this Education Loan Mela 2026 from the details I have about the education loans for students. The TVK government has annouunced ualready to support students, but the Madurai District administration must now take a decision to close the government accounts in private banks in Madurai and this is my appeal today to Madurai District Collector and Madurai Corporation Commissioner to come out of private banks that are not giving education loans,” Madurai MP Mr.Su.Venkatesan has said very strongly in the presence of Tamil Nadu Higher Education Minister Mr.P.Viswanathan along with MLAs of various assembly constituencies in Madurai district, top level officials etc and he thanked the government banks here on September 21st 2026.
While the nationalized Govt PSU banks had sanctioned 256 loans to the tune of Rs.28 crores, the total amount sanctioned by private banks like HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, CUB, KVB, TMB, Axis Bank etc was only Rs.2.17 crores through 19 loans, according to a press release received from the district administration in Madurai today, and totally 175 students received bank loans to the tune of Rs.30 crores with their parents thanking bank’s support for studies.
