MADURAI: Calling for immediate reforms in medical admissions in India to make medicine all about merit and not money, renowned career consultant Mr.Jayaprakash Gandhi has today expressed deep anguish that ‘MBBS seats are being given on a clearance sale with discount up to 40 per cent’.

“Discount is offered for private MBBS seats in 2026 late counselling rounds. In one deemed university in Tamil Nadu, there was a cut of Rs.10 lakh per year for medical seat admission…from Rs.25 lakh down to Rs.15 lakh. Another important point to be noted is that 656 seats are left vacant after Round 3 in Karnataka’s management quota,” Mr.JP Gandhi has said while expressing his strong views in his analysis report released on November 5th 2026.

THE REAL PROBLEMS:

Stating that MBBS seats are priced in the present system of medical college admissions, the leading education analyst has urged for scrapping of NEET and admit students through a fair/transparent system based on Class 12 performance.

“Even a discounted MBBS seat can still cost Rs.15 lakhs a year and only families with deep pockets can wait for or negotiate for a price drop. Top NEET coaching will cost lakhs of rupees. Hence, our rural and State-board and first generation students start the race from far behind,” Mr.Jayaprakash Gandhi had observed in his frank thoughts analysis report.

He raised a question on how two years of higher secondary classes and Plus Two can be overlooked when schools and board exams shape the students for years.

“Just one coaching-driven entrance test outweighs the board exams and schools. Over 22 lakh students depend on a single test called NEET even though there are paper-leak allegations and NEET-UG 2026 cancellation. This present system carries an enormous risk. I appeal to the government to stop giving permission to start new medical colleges for next three years and implement a few reforms like only one merit list for all MBBS seats including the management quota, there should be no fee haggling, no backdoor entry, and what is urgently required now is to regulate private college fees openly with bold measures and put an end to the clearance-style pricing of MBBS seats,” Mr.JP Gandhi has urged today and also asked the people to speak to their MP and MLA about medical seat admission reforms.

He stressed that medical education in India right now is slipping out of reach for ordinary families, and it is time for taking up urgent reforms to reward ability, and not the ability to pay.
