MADURAI: A 16-year-old boy who was having a severely underdeveloped left ear growth since his birth had undergone a successful ear reconstruction surgery by the ENT experts team at Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre (MMHRC) in Madurai recently.
“The underdeveloped physical look ear of this young boy which is a genetic congenital condition from his birth was reconstructed by the ENT doctors’ team by following rib cartilage surgery procedure in a single sitting procedure that was performed by a top class harvesting which was done from the young boy’s own ribs”, Dr.D.R.Nageswaran , Senior Consultant and Head of Department of ENT, told reporters at a press meet organized by Meenakshi Mission Hospital in Madurai today- July 2nd 2026- to explain about the reconstructed ear which was done for the young boy recently.
“The boy was born with a deformed left year and since his birth his left ear had a congenital condition characterized by an underdeveloped external year on his left year. We used 3D ear construction as a cosmetic rehabilitation procedure and today this young boy is having a natural looking left ear that closely resembles his right year. Our ENT team at Meenakshi Mission Hospital are successful in handling and treating this congenital condition called MICROTIA because of which the external ear remains severely underdeveloped and it causes an emotional distress to the affected person,” Dr.D.R.Nageswaran, HOD of ENT Department told reporters at the press meet here today-July 2nd 2026.
This ear reconstruction was done by using the cartilage harvested from this young boy’s own ribs and this 7-hour surgery was done in a single sitting to replicate the boy’s normal right ear by following top class medical surgical procedure in four stages, Dr.D.R.Nageswaran had explained to the media persons in Madurai at the press meet held on July 2nd 2026 at Meenakshi Mission Hospital in Madurai.
EAR LOOKS NOW NATURALLY:
“After this surgery, it looks like a natural ear, there will be skin sensation and it is a natural skin colour. We did this surgery in just a single stage. This young boy had emotional distress because of his underdeveloped ear and he looks normal now after our cosmetic rehabilitation done by the ENT team and this left ear now blends like a normal ear with normal sensation. The customized ear was positioned in the left ear location of this young boy,” the Meenakshi Mission Hospital team told reporters while explaining how the young boy’s left ear deformity was removed with their ENT expertise and how a natural-looking ear was placed by doing a reconstruction surgery procedure by using harvested cartilage and without using artificial implants.
The boy had no hearing in his left ear since birth and he relied entirely on his right ear for hearing, and this young boy can now get out of emotional and psychological burden of visible facial difference, the hospital team told reporters today.
“Restoring the boy’s ear hearing is not possible now, but it can be done in future if they want to go for a surgical procedure. What we did now is giving him a normal looking ear from the external side by our advanced reconstruction procedure,” the doctors added.
