MADURAI: Leading healthcare provider in southern Tamil Nadu- the Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre and Meenakshi Super Speciality Hospital (MSSH) in Madurai- has today announced that it had crossed the milestone of 500 robot-assisted surgeries and has set a benchmark in precision-driven surgical care by using advanced robotic technology.

“Our hospital got the first robotic surgical system in the year 2016 and in the last one decade we had set the trend in robotic-assisted surgeries by using “da Vinci” and “Toumai” robotic platforms for surgeries in multiple specialities including gastrointestinal, urology, breast and thyroid surgery, surgical oncology, cardiology, gynaecology and thoracic surgery. Today, we are happy to inform that 500 robotic surgeries have been completed in this hospital,” Dr.Ramesh Ardhanari, Medical Director and senior consultant in Department of Medical and Surgical Gastroenterology at MSSH, told reporters at a press meet here on October 21st 2026.

Stating that the Meenakshi Mission Hospital took a lead in introducing robotic technology a decade ago, he added that MSSH has already strengthened its robotic surgical capabilities and it is now aiming to expand robotic technology application to more procedures and with more features by December this year after getting the required approvals.

MORE SURGICAL PRECISION:

Dr.N.Mohan, Head of Department of Medical and Surgical Gastroenterology and a senior consultant, told the media in Madurai today that the availability of advanced robotic platforms complements conventional and laparoscopic techniques by allowing surgical teams to determine the most appropriate approach based on individual patient’s clinical needs.

“Robot-assisted surgery will have greater precision, 3D visualisation and gives a greater dexterity to surgeons. It simplifies the process and one important point that must be borne in mind is that the robotic system is always under the control of surgeon only,” senior consultants Dr.Jegadesh Chandra Bose and Dr.Pradeep in Department of Medical and Surgical Gastroenterology, have explained.

Dr.Paul Vincent, senior consultant, Department of Urology and Dr.Vijaya Bhaskar, Head of Department and Senior Consultant, Department of Surgical Oncology, spoke about how difficult areas in the body can be accessed for doing a surgery with the assistance of robotic technology.
