
At Rameswaram railway station, rail coach restaurant was opened by DRM on June 19th 2026.
MADURAI: Train passengers who are visiting the famous pilgrim town Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu will have a new experience in their memory track if they try for something new that was opened there today by the Southern Railway.
Rail Coach Restaurant (RCR) was started at Rameswaram railway station by recycling of decommissioned railway coaches and converting them into restaurants by utilizing the scrapped railway assets in a manner that will give good experience to rail passengers, according to a press release from Madurai Division of Southern Railway here today.
M/s Shifa Catering of Manamadurai is the licensee of this Rail Coach Restaurant at Rameswaram and it has been entrusted to manage RCR for a period of five years.
Mr.Om Prakash Meena, Divisional Railway Manager of Madurai Division-Southern Railway, had inaugurated the RCR at Rameswaram on June 19th 2026 in the presence of Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Mr.D.L.Ganesh and Divisional Commercial Manager Ms.D.Mohanapriya along with other railway officials and branch officers.
“RCR at Rameswaram is a first of its kind in Madurai Division of Southern Railway. At present, railcoach restaurants are in operation at Chennai Central, Potheri, Trichy, Thanjavur and Coimbatore railway stations. The interiors of railway coach are redesigned with comfortable seating, decorative lighting, wooden paneling and rail-local ambience. This rail coach restaurant operates round-the-clock for the convenience of passengers and tourists coming to Rameswaram., and it provides South Indian, North India, Chinese food, snacks, beverages, fast food items etc. There is CCTV monitoring and RCR is FSSAI compliant in food handling,” the railway press release here has informed.
Stating that rail coach restaurants will generate additional revenue by leasing and operating commercial food outlets, the Southern Railway has said that RCR will attract tourists and families because of the novelty of dining inside a railway coach in a railway station.
