MADURAI: A skill training programme on preparation of value added nutritious millet-based food products was organized by Fatima College in Madurai from March 9th to March 12th 2026 for members of Self Help Groups (SHG) in its adopted villages.
This hands-on training was held through an initiative of the college’s extension and ROSA teams under the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA) scheme, according to a press release received from Fatima College here yesterday.
Millet training programs are being conducted for women in villages to foster health, nutrition and rural entrepreneurship. to highlight the nutritional value of millets and train them how to prepare value-added products such as snacks, cookies and millet flours to generate income through millet products, the press release said.
Totally 25 women participants from Ambalathadi, Nedunkulam, Thirumalnatham and Thandalai villages had benefited from this UBA-SEG Rural Livelihood Project while senior food processing consultant Mr.Mariappan was the trainer.
Dr.Fatima Mary, Principal, Fatima College and Dr.Ignatius Mary, college Secretary had addressed the participants by emphasizing on rural entrepreneurship for livelihood.
“Millet products like ladoo, sev, shakkarpara, cakes, cookies and cutlets were demonstrated in the training programme and their preparation. Fatima College is helping women to make millet processing into a business and connect them with local markets through SHGs. We focused on processing, packaging and selling of millet products, and these focused programs are also aimed to combat malnutrition in rural areas,” the press release said.
