MADURAI: A public safety message was issued by the Madurai Division of Southern Railway today cautioning the general public and train passengers to be extremely careful near Railway Overhead Equipment which carries 25,000 volts of high tension electricity.

“In the last two days, two serious incidents of electrocution have been reported in Madurai Railway Division. So, we are appealing to the people to remain vigilant. A moment of carelessness can cost a life. Keep a safe distance from railway electric wires and electric installations,” a railway press release from Madurai on September 30th 2025 has urged the people.

On September 28th 2025 at around 3.30 pm, a 13-year-old boy from Madurai had climbed on top of a wagon of an empty goods train from Milavittan to Navalur which stopped near the home signal of Madurai railway station. He climbed up the train wagon to take a selfie and suffered severe electric shock, and was rushed to government hospital in Madurai with serious burn injuries.

And, in another incident, a 35-year-old unidentified man had climbed onto a stationary tanker wagon at Dindigul Railway Station Platform No.1 on September 29th 2025 at about 11.30 pm and he suffered over 80 per cent burns because he came in contact with railway overhead wire lines.

“Never touch electric wires, poles or equipment in railway stations. Do not climb on locomotives, wagons, coaches for taking selfies. Follow safety rules and prevent electrocution in all railway premises and at level crossings,” the railway press release in Madurai has said.
