MADURAI: A very serious issue of women harassment and mental torture being faced by some woman employees of Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) here is being discussed in the varsity campus here following a formal complaint made to the Tamil Nadu Government higher education officials and university Syndicate members.
MKU sources told ‘Lotus Times’ media in Madurai today-September 30th 2025- that a written complaint was given by the Women’s Studies Centre of Madurai Kamaraj University against the varsity Registrar in-charge Dr.M.Ramakrishnan and Special Officer Dr.Velanganni Joseph besides superintendent in special officer section Mrs.S.V.Gomathi for suppression of facts and corruption charges.
DELIBERATELY SABOTAGED IN MKU:
“As per the UGC XII Plan guidelines, our posts in Women’s Studies Centre at MKU should have been absorbed permanently by the year 2017 itself. We have submitted so many representations to MKU authorities for permanent absorption since 2017. We have submitted our representation to MKU Registrar on August 8th 2025 to place our request in the Finance Committee meeting and MKU Syndicate for approval. Unfortunately, this request of Women’s Studies Centre employees has been deliberately sabotaged within the university administration,” the complaint letter dated September 25th 2025 has said and a copy of that letter was received by ‘Lotus Times’ media from university administration sources.
The complaint letter was signed by the faculty of Women’s Studies Centre in MKU- Director in-charge Dr.R.Radhika Devi and assistant professor Dr.C.Subbulakshmi who have voiced their agony that MKU has not admitted students for M.A. Women’s Studies after 2018-19 academic year.
“Other State universities like Bharatidasan University, Alagappa, Mother Teresa and Kerala University have upgraded their Women’s Studies Centres as departments and the teaching staff were absorbed permanently. The Women’s Studies Centre at MKU in Madurai was established under the UGC XI Plan in 2009 and continued under XII Plan in the year 2012. So, we are now requesting the MKU Syndicate Convener/IAS Officers and top government officials to direct the university to immediately resubmit correct proposal on permanent absorption of Women’s Studies Centre teaching staff by following what was implemented in other universities,” the complaint letter had pointed out.
The Women’s Studies Centre faculty of MKU had clearly mentioned that the university officials who are directly responsible for sabotaging their career prospects are MKU Registrar Dr.M.Ramakrishnan, Special Officer Dr.Velanganni Joseph and Superintendent in Special Officer Section Mrs.S.V.Gomathi.
“We met the Registrar personally in his chamber on September 24th 2025 at around 2.45 pm to know about the status of our file. He did not give reply….and after some time he called Dr.Velanganni Joseph and Mrs.Gomathi to his chamber. We were mentally tortured by these three persons. When the women employees were pleading for their reply, they left the chamber and only a male attender was there in the office. We are requestin the Tamil Nadu Government and Syndicate Committee Convener to protect our academic dignity and take care of our financial hardships. The UGC in its email on June 6th 2025 had stated that account settlement for a sum of Rs.450 lakhs belongs to other departments are pending in MKU…and that the future grant under Women’s Studies Scheme should not be adversely affected. However, we are not receiving our salary in MKU,” the complaint letter by R.Radhika Devi and C.Subbulakshmi has pointed out, according to MKU administration sources.
