MADURAI: The countdown has already started for announcing the Plus Two results of both CBSE and State Boards. In almost every home, it will be a like suspense thriller for students and their parents starting from getting the marks and till the wait for college admission.
As the D-day is coming very closer, a leading senior consultant psychiatrist in Madurai Dr.I.Selvamani Thinakaran who has 45 years of experience in the field of mental health and counselling has given a few easy practical tips on how to beat the so called mental stress and emerge successful with the marks scored in Plus Two irrespective of the student’s calibre.
“The first point we notice during our counselling is that parents are transferring their anxiety and depression to the children. This must be avoided by parents in this 2025-26 academic year college admission period. The student is brilliant but it is the parents who put pressure on young minds, and at times it leads to psychiatric illness too for the children,” the senior psychiatrist who runs the Ilakkuvanar Mental Health Centre at K.Pudur in Madurai (near Pudur bus stand) has said speaking to ‘Lotus Times’ media here today-May 5th 2025.
WHY WORRY WHEN SCOPE IS PLENTY?:
Dr.Selvamani Thinakaran’s piece of advise assumes significance particularly in the context of NEET and IIT-JEE exam results because the mars factor is pushing the children to fear psychosis.
“I find that parents are under more stress than the student. Please understand that there is a wide scope and plenty of opportunities available today. Let the student decide the course as per his or her choice and interest. Don’t push them into a depressive mood after the Plus Two results. I myself had seen several instances where even a low-scoring Plus Two student had emerged successful out of college campus than those who secured high marks in Plus Two board exams,” she added.
THERE IS NOTHING LIKE TOPPER OR LOSER:
Motivating the parents and students to maintain a positive mood in home after the Plus Two results are out, Dr.I.Selvamani Thinakaran has cautioned that a student will get suicidal thoughts only if there is no encouragement from parents side.
“If parents put torture, the students get confused. Marks alone are not the determining factor. Ofcourse, we psychiatrists know the sacrifices of parents and how much money they spend for children’s education, be it in a rich or middle class or a poor family now-a-days. But, the parents should realize that today’s children are more clear and matured on what they want to study. So, leave the choice to them,” the senior psychiatrist says.
Dr.Selvamani Thinakaran’s fervent appeal to all the parents is to give emotional support and hand-holding to their children after the Plus Two results, whatever be the marks. “Be satisfied. Don’t use harsh or negative words. Be a morale booster to your son or daughter. Avoid comparing your child’s marks with others and this is time when you should avoid any sort of comparison. When you are feeling successful, then where is the question of stress,” she tells the parents and students.
