From classroom to mushroom: ‘Arokiya Santhai’ celebrates 1st anniversary in Madurai with triple celebration; Awards presented to two women teachers by VAPS-Green Fem

MADURAI: Dr.Mrs.Manjula Nagarajan, Dean (Academic Outreach) at Thiagarajar School of Management in Madurai and Mrs.R.Nagajothi, Headmistress of Kakkai Padiniyar Girls Higher Secondary School at Chokikulam here have been honoured with ‘Changemaker’ best teacher award at a function held in Madurai on September 5th 2026 in recognition of their valuable contribution to education from their classrooms as good mentors to students with a human touch.

The awards were presented to them at the 13th edition of ‘Arokia Santhai’ (healthy market) event organized jointly by Green Fem Women Producers Company and VAPS Training Centre at Gandhi Memorial Museum in the city yesterday.

“We completed a successful journey of 12 months of ‘Arokia Santhai’ which is being conducted on first Saturday of every month in the last one year. So, we had organized a ‘Mupperum Vizha’ by having a triple celebration to mark the ‘Arokiya Santhai’s first anniversary, Teacher’s Day and mushroom cultivation training programme,” Mrs.R.Elamathi, Director, Green Fem Women Producers Company, has said while addressing the gathering on September 5th 2026.

HEALTHY GROWTH OF ‘AROKIYA SANTHAI’:

Madurai District Deputy Collector Mr.G.Selvan (Adi Dravidar Welfare) and Madurai District Development Manager of NABARD Mr.A.S.Sakthibalan who were invited to motivate the participants of Green Fem women collective event have appreciated the concept and conduct of healthy market initiative with full focus on health is happiness.

“What was started on a small scale one year ago to provide women with a platform to market their products has now grown to more than 100 stalls. I could see happiness and enthusiasm on the faces of women entrepreneurs here,” Mr.A.S.Sakthibalan has said.

“Arokia Santhai’ is a special programme launched in Madurai by VAPS Training Centre and Green Fem Women Producers Company 12 months ago as a real market place for small women entrepreneurs to sell their products in the museum campus here.

Mr.S.A.Arul, secretary, VAPS Training Centre, had stressed that ‘Arokiya Santhai’ is helping the women to market their products and as a tool for economic empowerment.

Mr.R.Nanda Rao, secretary, Gandhi Memorial Museum and Dr.M.Subburajan, project officer at VAPS, spoke about the enthusiastic participation of women in this event which not only gave awards to classroom teachers but also gave training on mushroom cultivation.
