MADURAI: Kidney care and those who are waiting for a kidney transplant in southern districts of Tamil Nadu have a good news from Apollo Speciality Hospitals in Madurai with their latest success of performing ABO-Incompatible kidney transplant by using an advanced kidney therapy that saved the family of donor and the patient.
A 40-year-old man with O Positive blood group had received kidney from his wife who was kidney donor with A positive blood group and this success of performing ABO-Incompatible kidney transplant by using advanced Antigen-Specific Immunoadsorption therapy is a first of its kind in southern districts of Tamil Nadu, the Madurai Apollo team told reporters at a press meet held in Madurai today-September 3rd 2026- to highlight about the kidney recipient and kidney donor.
“We did a new method for kidney transplant at Madurai Apollo. This is not a conventional procedure for kidney transplant. Our surgical and medical team had done antibody study levels of both the recipient and donor who are husband and wife are of different blood groups. We did a careful antibody reduction and immunological preparation that is essential for kidney transplant. We did an advanced plasma treatment method for this patient and also to reduce the infection,” consultant nephrologist Dr.P.Arun Prasath and top heart specialist CTVS surgeon Dr.V.Sridhar who was in the transplant team here told reporters at the press meet in Madurai today about latest kidney transplant success.
COMPLEX BUT SUCCESS:
“The kidney transplant procedure for this 40-year-old male patient, which was done two months back and he is now normal, had a multi-disciplinary medical team comprising lead nephrologist Dr.Arun Prasath, Dr.R.Saravanan, Dr.Alagappan, urologists Dr.Arun Kumar J, Dr.Shankar K and Dr.Vishnuraja R along with CTVS surgeon Dr.V.Sridhar and the experienced anesthesia team Dr.Rikesh and Dr.Vasanth besides intensivist Dr.Ayappan and nursing cum critical care teams,” the Apollo Speciality Hospitals in Madurai has said in a press release to the media on September 3rd 2026.
The kidney transplant success model that was followed by the Apollo doctors team here was that they adopted antigen-specific immunoadsorption strategy to selectively remove anti-A anitbodies from the patient’s plasma and reduce the risk of infection, the Apollo Hospital’s press release has informed and added that this new method will be a good news for those who need kidney transplant with blood group incompatibility.
“With our ABO method, the patient’s anti-A antibody titre was successfully reduced from 1:256 to 1:8 and once the desired level was achieved, we did the ABO-incompatible kidney transplantation for this male patient with his wife being the donor,” Dr.P.Arun Prasath had explained at the press meet conducted in Madurai Apollo Hospital here today-September 3rd 2026 which was attended by Dr.P.Shobana, Medical Superintendent, Apollo Speciality Hospitals-Madurai to give details to the media about clinical challenges and kidney transplant success with ABO method.
