MADURAI: A college that carries the name of great selfless leader and former Chief Minister K.Kamaraj is facing a severe crisis in Madurai due to shortage of funds to run the college and the financial position that is worrying month after month.
The Madurai Kamaraj University College (MKU College) which is a constituent college of MKU here has today made an open fervent appeal to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Mr.C.Joseph Vijay and his TVK government to takeover MKU College and convert it into a government college in the interest of thousands of students and staff who are facing uncertainty in the campus for want of funds.
Dr.B.George, Principal in-charge of MKU College and Dr.P.Murugesan, associate professor / Head of Department of Management Studies who is also member of MKU Academic Council member, have explained the plight of their college to mediapersons while speaking to reporters at a press meet in the college campus today afternoon-September 3rd 2026- and they had pointed out that this college was left out when other colleges were taken into government list a couple of years back.
“This college was started 32 years back as a constituent college of Madurai Kamaraj University. But, right now both the college and university are facing shortage of funds. Because the university itself is having financial crisis, our MKU College too is getting affected. A representation was given to the State government already and our college issue was raised in the ongoing Assembly session by Higher Education Minister Mr.P.Viswanathan and our Madurai North MLA Mr.A.Kallanai who are aware of our request and sympathetic towards our genuine appeal on behalf of poor students who are paying high fees now,” Dr.P.Murugesan told reporters in Madurai today afternoon and added that it is like a self-financing college.
SALARIES, STAFF AND STUDENTS:
Echoing the request of his staff, MKU College Principal in-charge Dr.B.George has said that the college is facing a shortage of about Rs.3 crores every year and the burden is becoming severe because retirement benefits must be paid to the teaching faculty who are retiring from service after putting in decades of their service.
“The best option is for the Tamil Nadu government to take over the MKU College in Madurai or give specially allotted fund to MKU to support our college’s financial needs of salaries and administrative expenses every month. We thank our Madurai North MLA Mr.Kallanai who heard our grievances patiently and took up our college grievance to the State assembly,” Dr.B.George added.
The staff of MKU College including 19 regular staff, 85 consolidated pay staff, 30 guest lecturers who are working on hourly basis, six non-teaching administration side staff, 15 CPCLR and 15 CLR have been making an appeal to the State government and higher education authorities to quickly intervene and save MKU College which is located in the heart of Madurai city.
College sources said that the number of students admission too is slowly coming down because many government and govt-aided colleges are available nearby.
