MADURAI: History is always a great subject because it rekindles great memories of the past that are to be happily cherished by the present generation people of India wherever they are.
One such place to be celebrated and cherished is the present campus of Thiagarajar College at Teppakulam in Madurai and the great personality to be recalled by Madurai people is the most revered ‘Kalathanthai’ Thiagarajan Chettiar’ who remains in Madurai’s history forever as a great host for Swami Vivekananda, Mahatma Gandhi and Nethaji Subash Chandra Bose etc when they visited Madurai, and ofcourse, he is always remembered for the educational institutions he had started in Madurai many decades back.
“Our Thiagarajar College’s association with great personalities is from the days of Swami Vivekananda, Mahatma Gandhi and Nethaji Bose. In fact, Swami Vivekananda stayed in this same campus where it took shape as Thiagarajar College now… and Gandhiji had changed from his original attire to a simple dhoti when he stayed in our college founder’s place during his visit to Madurai at the time of our freedom movement. That is the great heritage of our college and our founder,” Dr.D.Pandiaraja, Principal of Thiagarajar College, has said proudly at the curtain-raiser event of ‘Maa Madurai Vizha 2.0’ which was held in Thiagarajar College at Teppakulam in the city on August 22nd 2026.
The Young Indians Madurai Chapter of CII is organizing ‘Maa Madurai Vizha 2.0’ in the first week of September 2026 with 28 events to celebrate Madurai’s heritage, culture, traditions, food etc with people’s participation with passion to showcase their talents and to celebrate Madurai as a great heritage city in India’s history.
