MADURAI: The Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce & Industry has described the TVK Government’s first budget as highly disappointing because the State budget had fallen short of the expectations of industrial sector in a big way.
TN Chamber president Dr.N.Jegatheesan has given the budget reaction today-August 5th 2026- stating that the first budget of Chief Minister Mr.C.Joseph Vijay’s government for financial year 2026-27 is highly disappointing since it had failed to announce any significant new initiatives for the growth and progress of people of Tamil Nadu, and for the industrial sector in particular.
NO NEW INDUSTRIAL ESTATES:
“The State budget presented in Assembly today-August 5th 2026 by Finance Minister Mr.N.Marie Wilson had fallen short of our expectations. Allocation of only Rs.2,142 crores to MSME sector is inadequate because MSME is our country’s backbone. In the budget, there was no announcement about setting up of new industrial estates in our State. For southern districts also, there is nothing except a new special Government Law College (School of Excellence in Law) for Madurai. There is nothing that stands out in this budget,” Dr.N.Jegatheesan has said while expressing the industry’s disappointment on behalf of Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry from Madurai.
He said that it is deeply disappointing that the TN Budget for 2026-27 did not announce or make any allocation for Metro Rail projects in Madurai and Coimbatore, both of which are long pending and this budget also has no announcement regarding long-pending Madurai-Thoothukudi Industrial Corridor Project or the Chennai-Kanyakumari industrial corridor.
“Also, the allocation for higher education in this year’s budget is less. It is only Rs.8,393 crores whereas the number of students going for higher education in Tamil Nadu is steadily growing,” the TN Chamber president had pointed out today.
The chamber also stated that the proposal to introduce river tourism along the Cauvery, Vaigai and Tamiraparani rivers in Tamil Nadu along with Adyar and Cooum water bodies in Chennai appears to be impractical from their feasibility point of view besides the prevailing environmental condition.
“However, the decision to install 50 lakh smart meters for industrial establishments in Tamil Nadu and the introduction of rooftop solar subsidy scheme to provide subsidy of up to Rs.1 lakh for residential households are welcome initiatives in the State budget which was presented in the assembly today for 2026-27,” the TN Chamber president Dr.N.Jegatheesan has said.
