MADURAI: While welcoming the maiden State budget presented in Tamil Nadu assembly today by the new government led by Chief Minister Mr.C.Joseph Vijay, the Tamil Nadu Foodgrains Merchants Association from Madurai has given a list of expectations that will help for the development of Madurai district and southern districts in all aspects.
The association had requested the Vijay government to provide multi-level car parking at 5 places in Madurai city also like what was announced for Chennai with 20 multi-level car parking slots in the 2026-27 budget presented by Finance Minister Mr.N.Marie Wilson today-August 5th 2026.
“Our association’s expectation from the State government is to open soon the car parking and shopping complex which was constructed at the demolished old Periyar Bus Stand in Madurai city. Like Chennai which is getting 1,000 electric and air-conditioned buses from today’s budget announcement, Madurai also must be provided with 100 buses of the same type,” the Tamil Nadu Foodgrains Merchants Association had requested today in its press statement on State budget reaction which was issued by association president S.V.S.S.Velshankar, secretary S.Sai Subramaniam and honorary advisor S.P.Jeyapragasam today afternoon.
FOR VAIGAI RIVER CHECK DAMS:
The association had also urged the TVK government led by Chief Minister C.Joseph Vijay to provide check dams for Vaigai River also on the lines of what was announced for Cauvery and Kollidam rivers. “Vaigai Dam has to be desilted, so that the water storing capacity of the dam and the surrounding areas will increase,” the press release from Madurai had added.
Another important appeal from Madurai today for the State budget is that significant allocation of funds should be made for the four industrially backward districts like Madurai, Virudhunagar, Sivagangai and Ramanathapuram districts “because in this State budget today, there is a provision of Rs.3,200 crores for industrial development of backward districts and a major portion of that amount must be given to these four districts since many industrial investments have been already given to Tuticorin and Tirunelveli districts”.
The association had welcomed some of the important announcements of today’s maiden budget of Vijay government in Tamil Nadu and they include the reforms in Registration Department, stopping corruption in building plan approvals, laptops to students, AI training program, sports development etc.
