‘UMAY’ shows TECH way for special children: TCE in Madurai starts assistive technology studio for special schools with 10 special products (Part-1)

‘umay’ tech studio for special children inaugurated at TCE campus in Madurai on April 20th 2026.

MADURAI: Special children, special educators and special schools in Madurai region and in Tamil Nadu will now have a dedicated facility at Thiagarajar College of Engineering (TCE) campus in Madurai that empower individuals with special needs through a technology which serves as a therapy for their well-being.

A special assistive technology studio named as “umay” (umayassist.com) was inaugurated in the TCE premises in Madurai today-April 20th 2026-to provide technology products that helps with appropriate technology intervention for children with special needs and persons with disabilities.

“We are committed to provide assisted learning tools and help the children with learning disabilities. Our ‘UMAY’ venture is meant to empower individuals with special needs. After a rigorous validation process by the agencies, we are opening the doors to empower special children with a special technology,” Dr.Uma Kannan, founder, UMAY Studio and president of Thiagarajar College in Madurai, has said in her presidential address at the inauguration of “Umay” studio in TCE campus in Madurai today morning as TCE governing council member.

She stressed that ‘ will serve as a dedicated facility at TCE campus in Madurai from where special schools can access therapy technology and use the technical innovations for teaching special children.

NO BARRIERS FOR SPECIAL CHILDREN:

“Accessibility to technology is the main gateway for inclusivity…and I am today saying from the TCE campus in Madurai that AI which is now famously known as Artificial Intelligence is also known as Assistive Intelligence and Accessibility/ Inclusivity. AI should help you and me. The TCE from Madurai did a great social responsibility by establishing “umay” assistive technology studio to create a world without barriers for children with special needs,” Mr.S.Govindaraj has said in his inaugural address at TCE campus in Madurai on April 20th 2026.

Stressing that Umay wants to make cutting-edge assistive tools that are truly accessible for people with special needs, Dr.Uma Kannan said that her personal journey with this project started in the year 2019 when her son Hari spoke to her about this project and his interest in supporting it.

S.Govindaraj, Chief Commissioner of Persons with Disabilities, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, had formally launched the special products that are going to help as assistive technology for the therapy of special children and special needs of individuals who are in the category of ‘Divyangan’.

“This UMAY assistive technology studio which was opened at TCE campus in Madurai today will help special children in a very big way. These are tools for inclusive education and a dignified living for education and empowerment of special children,” he added.

Dr.L.Ashok Kumar, TCE Principal, Prof.Dr.Sunil K Narayan, Dean (academic), JIPMER-Karailkal, Dr.D.Tamilselvi, professor, Department of Information Technology-TCE and Dr.C.Deisy, Head of Department of IT at TCE were among those who spoke about the significance of starting ‘umay’ in TCE campus from Madurai.

They highlighted that this special initiative will help special schools and special children for the special children’s cognitive function, concentration, hand-eye coordination etc through technology-driven interventions and tools that are now available from “umay” assistive technology studio that helps for tech driven therapy, cognitive-motor integration, daily living skills, community readiness, rehabilitation through music therapy, physiotherapy etc with focus on a four domains that will be very useful for special children therapists, special educators, special schools, clinics and rehabilitation centers.
