MADURAI: Renovation works of the famous Gandhi Memorial Museum in Madurai have been completed and a new look museum that suits the present trend of Gen Z youth is ready for formal inauguration anytime soon and it will be inaugurated definitely before Gandhi Jayanti (Oct 2).
“This historic museum was renovated at a cost of Rs.10.25 crores by the State government. All the proposed works are over and very soon our renovated museum with four fully refurbished attractive galleries, displays, photos and other facilities will be opened for public,” K.R.Nanda Rao, secretary, Gandhi Memorial Museum, told ‘Lotus Times’ media here today-September 11th 2026.
These four galleries will attract the people’s attention and especially Gen Z youth because special features have been introduced as per latest trend to make people understand about Indian Freedom Struggle, Visual Biography of Mahatma Gandhi, relics/replicas of Gandhi and about Gandhiji’s visits to Tamil Nadu, he added.
TOUCH SCREEN, PUPPET SHOW, KIOSKS ETC:
Lot of efforts have been taken to blend the great history with modernity by introducing touch screen displays that show about Gandhiji, ‘Rotoscope’ and an audio-visual AV theatre that will show 15-minute movie about Gandhiji and freedom struggle.
“We will have digital kiosks, puppet show etc in this renovated museum which is a 17th century heritage monument in Madurai which is the famously known as Rani Mangammal Palace. This museum was the first Gandhi Memorial Museum which was inaugurated in the year 1959 by the then Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. We are happy now that the renovation works were successfully completed by the Public Works Department of Government of Tamil Nadu,” Mr.K.R.Nanda Rao has said.
He also thanked Madurai North MLA Mr.A.Kallanai for raising about the Gandhi Memorial Museum during the recent Assembly session.
“The Minister for I&B Mr.Rajmohan is very supportive and we will fix the exact date of inauguration after consulting him very soon. Our museum team including Mr.M.Senthilkumar (museum treasurer) and staff are eagerly waiting for the opening of renovated Gandhi Memorial Museum to the public as early as possible,” Mr.K.R.Nanda Rao has said.
