MADURAI: Urology specialists of Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre (MMHRC) in Madurai had successfully removed four kidney stones for a just 10-month-old male baby by performing a minimally invasive procedure which do not need open surgery for the infant.
By using a miniature instrument and their expertise in paediatric urology, they had cleared multiple stones from both kidneys of the baby recently and demonstrated the latest treatment methods and medical infrastructure available in MMHRC to treat kidney stones among infants and children.
“This particular baby who is just 10 months old had obstructing stones in both kidneys resulting in no urine output and a critically high creatinine level. By performing “mini” PCNL which is a minimally invasive procedure, our medical team had removed the kidney stones and the baby is now doing well. The reason for kidney stones is metabolic abnormality,” Dr.D.Paul Vincent, senior consultant urologist and andrologist, MMHRC, told reporters at a press meet organized by the hospital here today-November 28th 2025.
The urology team had performed the procedure with paediatrician support by placing a tube on each side directly to both the kidneys, and the baby’s urine output showed marked improvement after the elevated creatinine level was reduced, he said while addressing the media along with Dr.R.Ravichandran, senior consultant and Head of Department of Urology and Dr.B.Kannan, Medical Administrator of MMHRC through a powerpoint presentation about PCNL (Percutaneous Nephrolithotony) which was done with a small incision.
SUCCESSFULLY MANAGED FOR 12 CHILDREN:
Dr.Paul Vincent has said that the hospital had successfully managed and treated 12 children this year alone without open stone surgery because of the expert paediatric urology doctors and advanced equipment available in MMHRC.
“We have latest medical infrastructure to remove kidney stones through Laser etc. Our urology team can do it precisely and the number of cases we did this year for babies and children up to four years of age shows our expertise in managing stone diseases for children,” Dr.D.Paul Vincent and Dr.R.Ravichandran have said today.
