MADURAI: Commissioner of Collegiate Education of Government of Tamil Nadu and Madurai Kamaraj University Syndicate convener committee chairman Mr.P.Ponniah IAS has given an assurance today that the problems faced with regard to Ph.D issues in MKU research section will be solved in one month and everything will be streamlined for the research scholars.
“We will make a detailed report in one month on Ph.D hardships that were brought to my attention. We will solve them and I can assure you that the grievances about functioning of Research Section in MKU, the pending promotions under Career Advancement Scheme for university faculty and shortage of associate professors will be thoroughly looked into very soon,” he said in Madurai today.
Mr.Ponniah was replying to an important adjournment motion moved by Academic Council member Dr.P.Murugesan from MKU College at the academic council meeting held in the university campus today-July 24th 2026.
The adjournment motion on grievances about Ph.D theses and the expectations of research departments in affiliated colleges was strongly supported by AC members including Dr.K.Sadasivam, Dr.V.Umamageswari, Dr.A.Velanganni Joseph, Dr.A.D.Paranthaman (Yadava College) and Dr.D.Pandiaraja (Principal of Thiagarajar College).
Members of the Academic Council had lamented that there is a lot of delay taking place in MKU Research Section and that is putting the research scholars to severe hardships because they have to wait for thesis evaluation for a long period due to shortage of associate professors for Ph.D. thesis evaluation and scarcity of guideship.
“Because the CAS promotions were not given, our assistant professors could not get promoted as associate professors. So, the root cause must be solved. I fully support the adjournment motion brought in by Dr.P.Murugesan who is asking this university authorities to allow assistant professors for Ph.D. thesis evaluation because we dont have adequate number of associate professors as on date,” Dr.K.Sadasivam had stressed.
GOVT ASSURANCE ON CAS PROMOTIONS:
While Dr.V.Umamageswari had pointed out the journal issues and constraints faced by Ph.D pursuing scholars, the other members had urged the Commissioner of Collegiate Education to solve the guideship issue at the earliest.
Dr.D.Pandiaraja, Principal of Thiagarajar College, had raised the hardships being faced by research centres in affiliated colleges of MKU and he also stated that self-financing (SF category) faculty also must be given Ph.D. guideship.
Responding to the members’ suggestions, the Chairman of Convener Committee Mr.P.Ponniah IAS has said that the Tamil Nadu government is looking into the pending CAS benefits and required money will be provided positively.
