MADURAI: Treatment for liver diseases and liver transplant for patients in southern districts of Tamil Nadu is now available in Madurai with an almost 100 per cent success rate due to coming together of famous MGM Healthcare hospital in Chennai and Lily Mission Hospital situated at Anna Nagar (opposite Golcha Complex) in Madurai.
The success details of this Chennai MGM-Madurai Lily was shared to the media at a press meet in Madurai here today-on July 3rd 2025-by both the hospitals informing that 35 liver transplants were successfully performed for patients in the last over three years.
“Today we have four families here in this press meet in Madurai. We are showing you the living donors and liver recipients. The MGM Healthcare from Chennai is doing liver transplants for patients with chronic liver failure. The latest is for a 48-years-old patient from Madurai who had chronic liver failure with severe jaundice, fatigue etc. We did liver transplant for him after his wife donated a part of her liver for the husband. This is living donor liver transplantation of the deceased liver with a lobe from a donor. There is nothing to worry for the liver because the donor’s liver can be regenerated in a few weeks and so both the donor and the recipient will be stable within weeks of liver transplant,” Dr.S.Thiagarajan, Director and Senior Consultant, Institute of Liver Transplant and HPB Surgery, MGM Healthcare Private Limited at Aminjikarai in Chennai, told reporters at a press meet in Madurai on July 3rd 2025 by informing that the success rate of liver transplant is 100 per cent.
WHY LIVER GETS DAMAGED AND WHO CAN DONATE?
Dr.A.C.Arun, gastroenterologist and hepatologist at Lily Mission Hospital in Madurai Anna Nagar, told reporters that alcohol consumption is the prime reason for liver damage and people should be careful with liquor, fatty liver, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C, jaundice and liver cirrhosis.
“The liver transplants were done at MGM Healthcare Hospital in Chennai. Liver donors can be in the age if 18 years to 55 years. For liver transplant, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Health Insurance Scheme is applicable and so nothing to worry for the liver patients. For the liver donor, there need not be any fear because the part of liver which they donate will get regenerated within just six weeks,” Dr.S.Thiagarajan from MGM Hospital in Chennai and and Dr.A.C.Arun of Lily Mission Hospital in Madurai told reporters here today while explaining that advanced liver treatment facility is available in Madurai itself for liver disease patents in southern districts of Tamil Nadu.
