MADURAI: A noninvasive treatment model for heart patients is becoming popular in Madurai thanks to the Enhanced External Counter Pulsation (EECP) therapy being followed by an interventional cardiologist here who is treating cardiac complaints with ease and showing good outcomes.
The recovery of patients through this therapy has reached the people with just word of mouth and now Dr.S.Prasanna has become a sought after heart specialist and his Pandian Heart Speciality Clinic at Surveyor Colony-Mattuthavani Road is delivering happy outcomes by treating the ‘heart block’ patients as just Out Patient (OP) cases, and of course it depends on the percentage of block.
“EECP is an effective tool to improve heart functioning. The machine is delivering significant improvement for the heart patients, and this therapy is suggested based on the block percentage in cardiac blood vessels. The point we are stressing here is that cardiologists should not straightaway go for a stent or bypass etc when we have this approved therapy available. We could bring back the patients to normal in maximum 35 sessions if my diagnosis and medical assessment says that EECP therapy is enough for a particular patient,” Dr.S.Prasanna told ‘Lotus Times’ media when it visited the clinic during OP timings on June 27th 2025 to understand this procedure.
HOW IT FUNCTIONS AND WHO CAN UNDERGO?
The EECP procedure can be done for those who have upto 40 per cent block and above that the cardiologist decides base don the nature of the block. Once it is done in daily sessions for the number of days prescribed, the blood flow to the heart gets improved gradually.
Dr.S.Prasanna explains that patients for EECP are selected after medical diagnosis and it is a therapy done as outpatient treatment for a duration of 10 sessions up to 35 sessions, and it is done for those are having chest heaviness, shortness of breath, chest pain, fatigue and cardiovascular problems.
The device installed at Pandian Heart Speciality Clinic at Surveyor Colony-Mattuthavani 120 feet road is US-FDA approved and the feedback from patients is good.
“We are improving the heart functioning quality through proper blood circulation to the heart and within a few sessions, the patients get into comfort zone. So, I am suggesting EECP also as one of the options to treat cardiac patients who suit for this treatment method,” Dr.S.Prasanna said.
There is a separate chamber for EECP procedure in this hospital and each session lasts for one hour daily. Already, patients started thronging the clinic after hearing about this therapy and the cardiologist too is happy along with the heart patients for the good outcomes in last few months ever since it was introduced.
