Diabetes can be managed if you come out of depression and stress: Madurai doctors give healthy tips for World Diabetes Day on November 14th

MADURAI: Senior doctors from Madurai have given a confidence-building message that mental and emotional health plays a key role in prevention and management of diabetes.

All that is required to be understood by at-risk population and diabetic patients is to understand that diabetes is a metabolic disorder and it can be easily managed if they keep stress and depression away while at the same time follow healthy food habits combined with easy physical exercises in their daily routine.

Expert doctors in diabetology and general medicine of Meenakshi Super Speciality Hospital in Madurai have released an important press note yesterday in connection with the World Diabetes Day on November 14th 2024.

BE CONFIDENT, NOTHING TO WORRY:

Dr.C.R.Mahesh Babu, Head of Department and Senior Consultant, Department of Diabetology, says that diabetes impacts not only physical health but also mental and emotional well-being.

“Diabetic patients often experience anxiety, depression, stress, burnout, low self-esteem and fear of complications. However, with a holistic approach, diabetes can be managed effectively and overall well-being can be maintained, Set realistic goals for physical exercise and healthy eating, celebrate small wings along the way in that process. Today, compared to 10 or 20 years back when only two or three medications were available for diabetes, there are 10 to 15 classes of drugs and various devices to administer insulin. Adhering to medication is what you have to do. Being actively engaged means staying aware about diabetes. Prioritize mental health and be confident,” Dr.C.R.Mahesh Babu has said in the press release issued by Meenakshi Super Speciality Hospital, Madurai.

EAT RIGHT AND GOOD SLEEP AT NIGHT:

Dr.P.Krishnamoorthy, Senior Consultant and HoD of Department of General Medicine, says that living with diabetes requires a proactive approach to maintain physical and emotional health. “Adopting healthy habits like eating balanced meals, controlling the food portions and choosing right snacks will set the foundation for managing blood sugar. Regular physical activity whether it is walking or yoga or swimming will help reduce the stress. Getting seven to eight hours of sleep every night is crucial as it supports body metabolism and mood stability. It is also important to be connected with family, friends and support groups to feel supported. Also, follow regular sugar checkup and medicine. Then you can lead a healthy life,” Dr.P.Krishnamoorthy has advised.

AVOID SEDENTARY LIFESTYLE:

The expert doctors had cautioned that the incidence of diabetes has been on the rise in the younger population, those who are in 20s and 30s, owing primarily to stress filled routine and their sedentary lifestyle.

“Avoid unhealthy food choices, don’t neglect medicines and understand the ABCs- Hemoglobin, blood pressure and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol under control. The HbA1c level must be below 7 per cent. Maintaining BP within the normal range of 120/80 mmHg is essential to manage diabetes effectively and prevent heart diseases, stroke and other health issues. In general maintaining an LDL level of cholesterol level below 100 mg/dL is ideal,” the doctors of Meenakshi Super Speciality Hospital in Madurai have pointed out.

In India, there are over 100 million people who are living with diabetes while more than 150 million who are pre-diabetic with blood sugar levels in the borderline range.

“If left unmanaged, diabetes can lead to complications such as heart diseases and stroke, kidney damage and kidney failure, vision loss, nerves damage, foot ulcers etc. So, just be healthy and nothing to worry of you eat healthy food and go for little physical exercises daily,” the doctors said and it was informed that the hospital is spreading diabetes prevention to a larger public through a special camp at Gandhi Museum and Teppakulam here on the occasion of World Diabetes Day on November 14th 2024.
