MADURAI: The Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has hailed the Union Civil Aviation Ministry’s move that Madurai airport will soon be operational in 24X7 mode because the TN Chamber has been continuously insisting for the past 10 years that Madurai airport should be operated as a 24X7 airport.
In a press statement issued from Madurai, the chamber president Dr.N.Jegatheesan has said that the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation is going to announce that Madurai airport will soon be operational in 24 X 7 mode, and IndiGo Airlines is taking steps to implement direct flight service between Madurai and Kualalumpur-Madurai sector very soon, by employing retired ex-servicemen as passenger service assistants at Madurai airport along with CISF personnel.
“Madurai airport has so far not been upgraded as an international airport and is functioning only as a Customs airport. Though Madurai airport has only three international flights, it handles a large number of passengers. Already Coimbatore, Vijayawada, Shirdi, Kannur and Tirupati airports have been declared as international airports by the Union government and they handle less number of passengers compares to Madurai airport. Since the Madurai airport has a large number of international passenger traffic, there should not be any delay on declaring Madurai airport as an international airport. It will be a catalyst for economic and industrial growth of southern districts of Tamil Nadu, and Madurai is also a destination for medical tourism and general tourists. We request the Union Civil Aviation Ministry to include Madurai airport in BASA (Bilateral Air Service Agreement) with other countries. Please allow the international airliners to operate direct flight services to Madurai soon,” Dr.N.Jegatheesan, president, Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, has appealed in a press release dated 7th January 2023, issued from Madurai.
