MADURAI: A strong appeal was made by teachers’ association MUTA requesting the Government of India to scrap the present National Education Policy (NEP) and take steps to draft a new education policy in consultation with all stakeholders because the present NEP 2020 promotes centralization, corporatization and commercialization of education.

This was one of the important resolutions passed at the MUTA’s 25th general conference that took place in Madurai on 7th and 8th January 2023 where several topics connected to ‘Save Higher Education’ were discussed and highlighted by experts as a part of the association’s golden jubilee year.

The association had requested the Union Government to also scrap the CPS and restore old pension scheme to protect the welfare of employees after retirement. MUTA had also urged the centre to protect autonomy of higher educational institutions and also implement ‘Equal Pay Equal Work’, besides a demand for a comprehensive legislation to regulate self-financing higher education institutions.

MUTA also made an appeal to the UGC to direct all universities and colleges to strictly monitor/follow the UGC guidelines in the appointment of college Principals. The association had made a fervent appeal to the Tamil Nadu government to scrap the CPS and restore old pension scheme, and also to issue proceedings for the implementation of professor cadre for college teachers. Several important resolutions for the rights of children, desisting from pseudo science subjects etc were passed at the 25th MUTA general conference organized in Madurai on January 7th and 8th 2023 as a part of MUTA golden jubilee year.
