MADURAI: The timely intervention of Madurai district administration has saved the famous ‘Madurai Malli’ from perishing and thereby protected the famous jasmine flowers and growers from Corona lockdown.

Nearly 1,500 kilos of Madurai Jasmine flowers are now being sent to a perfume unit in Coimbatore everyday thanks to special permission given to transport the flowers from Madurai to Coimbatore. It is being done since 26th March following a representation given to Madurai district collector Dr.T.G.Vinay through Horticulture Department.

Mr.N.Karthikeyan of S.N.Flowers in Madurai has said on 4th April 2020 that jasmine flowers have been given special exemption from the Corona curfew lock down by the district administration in the interest of farmers and growers of famous ‘Madurai Malli’.

“Our thanks to Madurai district collector Dr.T.G.Vinay. for his help…..Jasmine growers from southern districts got some relief and our S.N.Flowers is sending jasmine to a scent perfume company ‘Aroma’ in Coimbatore daily…..This intervention is giving minimum income to farmers and their flowers are not going waste,” Mr.Karthikeyan has said.

Jasmine flowers are predominantly grown at place like Thanakankulam, Valayapatti, Valayangulam, Kusavangundu, Chinna Udaippu, Perungudi, Nilaiyur and Kalligudi. In neighbouring Virudhunagar district, the jasmine comes from Kariapatti area.
