MADURAI: The Tamil Nadu Rice Mill Owners Association has assured from Madurai today that there is no scarcity or supply shortage of rice availability in the State right now despite the fears of threatening ‘El Nino’ climate factor which is affecting normal rainfall and agriculture cultivation of farmers along with poor monsoon rains.

“The price of rice varieties is going up in the market right now in our State only due to panic buying created through social media. We appeal to the people to stop panic buying because there is enough rice stock in our godowns and there is absolutely no scarcity or supply shortage of rice even though El Nino had affected badly the cultivation and harvest of paddy cultivation,” Mr.M.R.Dinesh Singh, president and Mr.K.Rajendran, secretary had assured the people of Tamil Nadu at a press meet organized in Madurai today-October 11th 2026- by Tamil Nadu Rice Millers Association to dispel fears of rice scarcity which is leading to panic buying right now.

Reassuring that there is adequate stock of rice presently with rice millers, the association has said that rice stock fears are arising only due to demand shift in rice varieties.

“It is very much true that El Nino climate had a severe adverse effect and also the poor rains had hit TN paddy cultivation. But, we want to assure the people of Tamil Nadu today that only some varieties of fine rice supply were hit due to drought but not the entire rice supply chain. Only due to public fears created in social media, the rice price went up from Rs.50 per kg to Rs.75 per kg, and it helps the sellers and middlemen only. The ‘Sanna rice’ fine grain variety rice supply got affected from important cultivating States like Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Kerala. The short supply of that rice variety is being created as if there is going to be a rice scarcity in Tamil Nadu, and it is not at all true,” the Tamil Nadu Rice Mill Owners Association had clarified has said and added that rice millers in the State will always have enough rice stock needed for the three months even when the normal supply chain continues from farmers to millers.

The association had appealed to Tamil Nadu State government to give subsidy/incentives and encourage the Tamil Nadu farmers with good MSP to grow ‘Sanna’ varieties of rice.

“Please understand that North East monsoon rains are going to start soon and paddy cultivation will become normal very soon if we go by weather predictions. Rice price will gradually come down in Tamil Nadu. There is a good size of buffer stock in our godowns. We appeal to the TCSC, market committees to help farmers in this stage and we urge the government to create a shift in rice growing model by going for rice varieties that are being demanded by the people currently. Our agriculture experts and agriculture university should step in quickly to set right the future rice scarcity fears that are arising due to rice supply drop from AP and other States. Right now, there is nothing to worry about rice availability situation in our State and we are sure that things will become normal in next 4 months as demand-supply situation will get normal after the ensuing monsoon,” the Tamil Nadu Rice Mill Owners Association team of its president M.R.Dinesh Singh and secretary K.Rajendran along with other members has said at its press meet in Madurai today-October 11th 2026 and they also sought a proactive paddy procurement mechanism.
