MADURAI: Guru Hospital in Madurai had successfully performed robotic-assisted heart bypass surgery for a 40-year-old male patient who had a couple of blockages in his coronary arteries.
The hospital has today announced that robotic technology will be extended to other cardiac procedures like heart valve surgeries etc also in a phased manner as this patient from Kovilpatti had a successfully heart bypass surgery and is fast recovering to normal.
A press meet was organized at Guru Hospital here today-September 30th 2026- where senior consultant cardio-thoracic surgeon Dr.R.Meenakshi Sundaram and hospital chairman Dr.S.G.Balamurugan have explained about the latest robotic surgical system that was installed in the hospital to use modern advanced technology for heart surgeries.
“This surgery was done on September 14th 2026. In conventional heart bypass surgery, the breastbone(sternum) is opened to access the chest cavity, then LIMA (Left Internal Mammary Artery) is harvested and prepared to create a bypass for the blocked coronary artery. But in robotic technology available now, we need not open the breastbone because robotic instruments are inserted into the chest cavity through small incisions. The bleeding will be very minimal,” cardiac surgeon Dr.R.Meenakshi Sundaram told reporters in Madurai today.
DEPENDS ON PATIENT’S SUITABILITY:
He said that robotic approach for bypass surgery will be decided by the doctors depending on the patient’s suitability for that procedure and only after a comprehensive evaluation.
“Our Guru Hospital has state-of-the-art MEDBOT robotic surgical system which we got two months back. It helps in the preparation of LIMA blood vessel and a 360-degree rotation that helps the surgeon with precision and top class 3D imaging,” the heart specialist has said and added that patient’s recovery too will be faster since the incisions are small for doing the surgery.
