CHENNAI: The National Voluntary Blood Donation Day was observed in Tamil Nadu today-October 1st 2026-by organizing blood donation camps at 100 locations across the State under the auspices of Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) through its district branches, Youth Red Cross and Junior Red Cross in coordination with government blood donation centres.
Mrs.R.Seethalakshmi IAS, Project Director, Tamil Nadu State AIDS Control Society and Member Secretary of Tamil Nadu Blood Transfusion Council, had inaugurated the blood donation camp conducted at IRCS State headquarters in Chennai today and she said that Tamil Nadu is setting a benchmark in blood donation thanks to the voluntary participation of people.
“Blood donation is a voluntary involvement and we want it to be free, non-remunerated, safe, adequate and accessible and ofcourse the quality of blood donation is also being taken into account. Our State has already collected nearly 9.5 lakh units of blood through 4,850 blood donation camps as against the annual target of 4,500 camps thereby exceeding the overall State-level collection target. Every district in Tamil Nadu is expected to achieve annual blood collection equivalent to at least one per cent of its population and it should be voluntary. As our State’s population is around 8 crores, the corresponding annual benchmark for blood donation is about 8 lakh units of blood,” TANSACS Project Director Mrs.R.Seethalakshmi has said today and she lauded the role being played by the Indian Red Cross Society by conducting blood donation camps in the State.
