MADURAI: The All India Save Education Committee had today strongly condemned the TVK government’s relaxation of rules for private universities in Tamil Nadu and had totally opposed the decision of Chief Minister Mr.C.Joseph Vijay’s administration to make it easy for private varsities at a time when State universities are in acute financial crisis.

In a press statement issued from Chennai on September 9th 2026, the Tamil Nadu Chapter of All India Save Education Committee had condemned the manner in which the TVK Government had amended Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Private Universities Act in the State Assembly and made it more easy to privatize higher education in the State.

“The TVK government which is currently in power has now relaxed the rules and amended TN Private Universities Act brought by AIADMK Government in 2019, and the earlier requirement of a minimum of 100 acres of land to establish a private university in Tamil Nadu has been relaxed through this amendment of the Act. This will lead to further commercialization of education in favour of market forces and private parties,” according to the press statement released today by V.Sudhakar on behalf of All India Save Education Committee (Tamilnadu Chapter).

LAND REQUIREMENT REDUCED:

In this amended Act, the land requirement has been reduced from 25 acres to 12 acres in corporation areas and from 35 acres to 18 acres in municipality/town panchayat areas while it was reduced from 50 acres to 25 acres in other areas, the press release said and added that even the endowment fund for starting a private university has been drastically reduced from Rs.50 crores to Rs.25 crores.

“Already, the government universities in Tamil Nadu are in doldrums. Our of 22 government varsities in our State, 15 varsities are without Vice-Chancellor and facing severe financial crisis as they got pushed to a destitute condition. In this situation, the TVK government had amended the Act which will help private universities and help the National Education Policy 2020 implementation in Tamil Nadu,” the All India Save Education Committee had accused and urged all sections of people, teachers and associations to raise their voice TVK government for its pro-private stand in education.
