MADURAI: A 51-year-old male patient had a successful robotic-assisted surgical intervention by the expert urology team at Meenakshi Mission Hospital in Madurai to remove a cancerous tumour in his right kidney and a 1.2 cm kidney stone in his left kidney in a single sitting.

“Kidney-sparing robotic surgery and stone removal were performed in a single sitting to save the right kidney and left kidney of this same patient by using our expert urology doctors and advanced technology surgical machines available in our hospital”, Dr.B.Kannan, Medical Administrator of Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre (MMHRC), has said while speaking to reporters at a press meet organized by the hospital here today-September 8th 2026.

Dr.D.Paul Vincent, senior consultant urologist and andrologist, told media persons in Madurai today that the male patient had come for a normal health checkup but his kidney problems could be were found at an early stage only because he came for a health checkup of his body and this health checkup includes kidney test also as a routine procedure.

HEALTH CHECKUP IS A MUST:

“So, this particular case will reinforce the doctors’ appeal that periodical health checkup is a must for every person. With kidney-sparing partial nephrectomy, our team had removed a 3 cm cancerous tumour from right side kidney of this person and also removed a 1.2 cm kidney stone from his left kidney in a single sitting by following robot-assisted surgical procedures like Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery (RIRS) which is a minimally invasive procedure to remove kidney stones,” senior urologist Dr.Paul Vincent told reporters in Madurai today at press meet held in Meenakshi Mission Hospital.

The other urology top team at MMHRC comprising Dr.Ravichandran (senior consultant and HOD-Urology) along with senior consultant anaesthetist Dr.Kannan who were present at the press meet today had expressed happiness that bot the kidneys of of this patient are functioning normally now, and this surgery was done four months back in this hospital.

“Robotic is an advantage these days for medical technology. While the tumour was removed in his right kidney, our advanced procedure preserved his healthy kidney tissue thanks to the precision of our urology team in MMHRC. This is a very complex challenging case because both the kidneys of this same person got affected, and we could detect his problem early through a just ultrasound scan done to him when he came for a health checkup. He is now normal and going to his work,” Dr.R.Ravichandran told reporters in Madurai today and this medical team includes consultant urologist Dr.Venugopal Konanki and associate consultant urologist Dr.Ranjith Mahadevan.
