MADURAI: The Railway Higher Secondary School in Madurai which is a CBSE-affiliated institution had celebrated its 132nd annual day today-April 9th 2026- by recalling its great cherished legacy and success in the field of education.

Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Madurai Division of Southern Railway Mr.Omprakash Meena was the chief guest for annual day event while Additional Divisional Railway Manager Mr.V.Prasanna had presided over the function, according to a press release from the railway here today evening.

The famous Railway Higher Secondary School in Madurai was established in the year 1894 as a primary school under the erstwhile British period and this school was recognized by the Director of Public Instructions in Madras Presidency on 13-9-1895, and it had initially catered to the wards of European and Anglo-Indian railway officers from where it had grown steadily over the decades, the railway press release has informed.

TO THE PRESENT BUILDING IN YEAR 1911:

“This school moved to its present building in Madurai on 11-11-1911, and it has evolved into a full-fledged higher secondary school by primarily serving the educational needs of the wards of railway employees by providing English medium education at a low cost. Right now the Railway School in Madurai has 429 students including 270 wards of railway employees and 159 non-railway students,” the press release added.

Classes 6th to 11th were introduced between 1960 and 1966 and since then the railway school has been maintaining a very good academic results every year of students’ pass percentage thanks to the support of parents and from organized unions to support this campus.

At the 132nd annual day celebration function of Railway Higher Secondary School in Madurai today, the DRM and top railway officials had distributed prizes and awards to students who had excelled in studies, sports, games and cultural activities.

Mr.T.Sankaran, Senior Divisional Personnel Officer, Mrs.Sarita Meena, president, Southern Railway Women’s Welfare Organization and Mrs.A.Anjammal, Principal, Railway Higher Secondary School-Madurai, were among those who lauded the school’s accomplishments in the last 132 years while school teacher M.Tamil Chezhian had presented the school’s annual report and A.Paulsekar had proposed a vote of thanks.
