MADURAI: A 13-year-old girl from Theni who had a rare and complex congenital vascular condition had undergone a life saving surgery at Apollo Speciality Hospitals in Madurai recently.

The girl patient who had severe breathing difficulties was treated for a very rare congenital condition called ‘Abernethy malformation’ in which the blood which is supposed to pass through the liver bypasses it and flows directly into the heart due to an abnormal vascular connection.

At a press meet held in Theni on February 25th 2026, the medical experts team had briefed the media about this advanced surgical intervention that was done for an extremely uncommon condition of blood bypassing the liver and flowing directly into the heart thereby potentially leading to severe liver complications, if untreated.

The child’s condition was first identified when Apollo Hospital’s surgical gastroenterology consultant Dr.Srinivasan Ramachandran went for a clinical visit to Gayathree Medical Centre in Theni.

“Consultant general physical at Gayathree Medical Centre Dr.Venkatesh Nirgund who understood the seriousness of the case and he referred the girl to Apollo Speciality Hospital in Madurai for advanced evaluation and treatment. Then, the rare congenital condition called ‘Abernethy Malformation’ was revealed after contrast CT scan etc…and globally only 300 cases of this condition have been reported,” according to a press release from Apollo Speciality Hospitals here yesterday.

Dr.Srinivasan Ramachandran told reporters that an intra-operative Doppler scan had confirmed blockage of abnormal blood flow and the surgery which was done with meticulous planning and precision had saved the girl’s life by restoring normal blood circulation.

Dr.J.Madhusudhanan, consultant-surgical gastroenterology, had emphasized the strength of Madurai Apollo’s surgical gastroenterology team and how the child’s liver function returned to normal thereby leading to a smooth recovery.
