Pongal at old age home in Madurai, TANRECTA’s gesture to senior citizens with new clothes, breakfast

MADURAI: Inmates of old age home situated at Shenoy Nagar in Madurai had happy moments on Monday as members of Tamil Nadu Retired College Teachers’ Association (TANRECTA) had spent time with them on the occasion of Pongal festival.

A special event was conducted by TANRECTA Madurai district unit on January 12th 2026 to distribute new clothes and breakfast to the elderly persons who are residing in this old age home which is being jointly run by Madurai Corporation and Thanumalayan Trust, according to a press release here yesterday.

“Dhotis and sarees were distributed to more than 80 senior citizens staying in the old age home at Shenoy Nagar in Madurai. The aged persons were very happy with our association’s gesture,” the press release added.

Prof.D.S.Rajendran, retired librarian of Sourashtra College in the city, had donated dhotis and sarees in memory of his late parents while Prof.Krishnan who worked at S.Vellaichamy Nadar College had sponsored breakfast for the old age home residents.

G.Ramamoorthy, TANRECTA-Madurai president, N.Periyathambi, secretary, K.V.Anandan, joint secretary and Dr.Abdul Kadir, former Principal of Wakf Board College along with members including Prof.D.S.Rajendran and family members had involved themselves in this gesture towards the elderly people who are staying in the old age home.

“The senior citizens had offered prayers and blessed Prof.Krishnan and Prof.Rajendran for their kind gesture. The old age home administrator Mr.Murugappan had thanked the association for its support,” the press release said.
