MADURAI: As the election stage is ready to take shape soon for the 2026 Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has started its preparations for the poll fray and its top focus is to put its popular senior leaders in the list of MLA candidates who will take on the DMK and emerge victorious with their past experience in electoral hustings.

One of the key districts that is being taken as a top priority by the BJP is Madurai not only because of the recent attention that it is getting from the national leadership through visits of Union Home Minister Mr.Amit Shah and others but also because of the galvanized cadre that is determined to work for the victory of NDA candidates in the coming polls.

Reliable sources in BJP told ‘Lotus Times’ media here on June 24th 2025 that the party is going to firmly demand for Madurai South Assembly constituency for contesting in the assembly elections and it wants to field senior leader Prof.Raama Sreenivasan as its candidate from Madurai South.

“Our demand for Madurai South seat is based on a reason. Prof.Raama Sreenivasan was the Lok Sabha candidate of BJP from Madurai Parliament constituency in 2024 elections and he got more than two lakhs votes. That shows his popularity among the voters in Madurai, and in that election the BJP secured 42,000 votes in Madurai South segment. Already the BJP got its first corporation councillor from Madurai South. Since our party had demonstrated its strength in Madurai South in the last few elections, we will definitely demand that Madurai South assembly constituency should be given to the BJP when seat-sharing talks take place among the alliance parties and especially with the AIADMK,” a senior State level leader has said today.

Meanwhile, Madurai city BJP cadres are also voicing their support for Prof.Raama Sreenivasan as Madurai South candidate because a few dominant castes have shifted their support towards the BJP since they are now not comfortable with the DMK.

“It will be a cakewalk for the BJP if Madurai South is given to the BJP and definitely we will demand for that from the AIADMK at the time of elections. Prof.Raama Sreenivasan is a caste neutral person and he is focused on development politics with his immense knowledge in multiple domains. The combination of voters from Sourashtra community, Thevars, Pillamar etc will work in our favour and our demand is based on the number of votes our BJP candidate got in the last Lok Sabha elections. So, Madurai South will be on our radar as an important constituency and we want to contest from here,” a BJP leader has said today on condition of anonymity.
