MADURAI: The fast changing advanced technology led by Artificial Intelligence (AI) is going to influence and impact the tourism sector also in a significant way as travel planning and holidaying will go in a top gear digital mode in coming years.
To commemorate the World Tourism Day 2026, a special event was organized today-September 26th 2026- by Madurai Kamaraj University College (MKU College) in its campus in the city to commemorate the day with this year’s theme “Digital agenda and AI to redesign tourism” by involving its staff and students.
Madurai North MLA Mr.A.Kallanai visited the campus as chief guest and he appreciated the college team for hosting an event for tourism which is close to Chief Minister Mr.C.Joseph Vijay’s heart and that too in a place like Madurai which is an important spot for domestic and international tourists.
Dr.B.George, Principal in-charge of MKU College who is a renowned faculty in India for tourism courses with three decades of teaching experience from 90s, has said that AI will be an important factor for tourism because technology is getting linked to culture sports, heritage sites, temples, airlines etc and AI will be an added advantage for the existing tourism sector.
Dr.P.Kabilan, Vice Principal of MKU College, has said that sustainable tourism will be possible if AI gets connected with tourism industry because that same AI which is inevitable now will tell and take the tourists to many of top tourist cum eating spots in Madurai thereby generating a good business for various fields.
Mrs.Uma Devi, District Tourism Officer of Madurai District, welcomed the students who took part in large number in this event at MKU College today.
Inter-collegiate competitions and seminars on tourism were conducted with participation of 10 colleges and the MKU College Principal Dr.B.George had thanked the Tourism Department of Government of Tamil Nadu and MKU College’s departments of tourism management and hotel management-catering management faxulty who are associated with the World Tourism Day 2026 event in MKU College campus in Madurai.
The World Tourism Day is being celebrated every year on September 27th 2026 globally and this year’s theme with AI focus will set the tone for global tourism through technology-driven travel plans in India and abroad.
