MADURAI: A survey conducted by Tamil Nadu Science Forum (TNSF)-Madurai district unit has revealed a few shocking findings about bad civic maintenance in Madurai and that only 44 per cent of waste collection is being done daily on city roads.
The survey report along with recommendations was submitted to Madurai Corporation and a copy of that was released to the media here yesterday-September 25th 2026.
“We did a survey analysis on household garbage management in Madurai. The response from people indicates that the corporation must take urgent measures for collection of garbage, door-to-door waste collection, provide more dustbins on streets and in public places. Our survey at various places in Madurai had focused on garbage collection frequency, source segregation, dustbin distance and other issues,” Dr.S.Dinakaran, convenor of TNSF environment sub-committee, told reporters while explaining about the pathetic condition on many streets in Madurai.
He said that the feedback survey analysis has showed that there is 44% daily collection of garbage waste, 18 per cent within two days and 38 per cent more than two days.
DUSTBIN ACCESS IS INADEQUATE:
“So, the focus of our corporation should be on missed-collection. Dustbin access is also a worry for Madurai residents as 36 per cent of the respondents clearly stated that they is a bin distance up to 200 metres, 20 per cent reported more than 500 metres distance,” Dr.Dinakaran told the media while releasing survey report along with study group member Prof.P.Rajamanickam.
The study group team of TNSF for municipal solid waste management issues includes Dr.Antony Paul, Dr.K.Kannan, Mrs.Vennila, Dr.S.Dinakaran, Dr.S.Krishnasamy and Prof.P.Rajamanickam.
A few recommendations were given by this study group survey report and the Madurai Corporation has been urged to follow a fixed schedule for waste collection in every street, collect the waste directly from houses, establish special waste collection centers, create ward-wise monitoring system by involving the local residents, conduct monthly meetings at ward level to get public feedback and strictly implement separate bins in houses for waste segregation.
The TNSF Madurai team has been conducting monthly awareness campaign named ‘Kuppai Nadai’ (garbage walk) for the past four months and that feedback also helped in preparing the report , Prof.P.Rajamanickam has said and he appealed to the Madurai Corporation to increase the number of conservancy sanitary workers because right now there are only four persons for 800 houses and so each worker is covering 200 houses.
