MADURAI: Renowned psychiatrist in Tamil Nadu and a prominent Madurai-based mental health expert Dr.C.Ramasubramanian had given a national alert by stating that 10.6 per cent of Indian population is affected by mental health disorders and what is important is early identification of the persons to give them timely psychiatric consultation for mental strength.
Dr.CRS, who is the founder of M.S.Chellamuthu Trust & Research Foundation (MSSRF), was speaking at a special program conducted in the district collectorate here as an advocacy on mental health for Block Development Officers and staff of DRDA in Madurai district on August 5th 2026 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Erwadi fire victims whose families are affected due to mental health disability issues of persons.
“M.S.Chellamuthu Trust and Research Foundation had conducted an advocacy programme in Madurai in collaboration with Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department. Block Development Officers had attended the sessions. Mr.S.Satheesh Kumar, Project Director/Joint Director of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj had taken this initiative with the guidance of our Madurai District Collector Mr.Nishanth Krishna. It was very helpful for advocacy of mental health awareness to our people here,” according to a press release from MSSRF here yesterday.
Dr,CRS had stressed that as per national statistics nearly 10.6 per cent of Indian population is affected by mental health disorders and all mental illnesses are treatable, manageable and preventable with early identification and timely psychiatric consultation.
TREATMENT FOR MENTAL HEALTH:
“People can be helped to overcome stigma and encourage the affected persons to seek mental health treatment. Make use of our Trust’s mental health helpline. Addiction among youth is also a major factor and please refer the affected individuals for mental health treatment,” Dr.C.Ramasubramanian, founder and senior consultant psychiatrist at M.S.Chellamuthu Trust and Research Foundation in Madurai had advised by emphasizing the importance of community support in identifying the individuals and referring them for psychiatric treatment.
Mr.K.S.P.Janardhan Babu, Director-Programmes at M.S.Chellamuthu Trust in Madurai, spoke about the Trust’s mental health initiatives and about the Mental Health Revolution Day being observed every year on August 6th in remembrance of Erwadi fire tragedy victims.
Mr.K.S.P.Janardhan Babu shared a few inspiring success stories of homeless persons with mental illness who were rescued from the streets and how they were given psychiatric treatment successfully with the support of district administration, the press release said.
A mental health oath was taken by the participants in this mental health awareness program to support persons with mental health disabilities and psychic mental health conditions.
