Madurai airport declared as international airport; Expansion works for terminal buildings, parking etc to be taken up by AAI

MADURAI: The Union government has today approved declaration of Madurai airport as an international airport and gave a huge fillip for regional air connectivity, trade and economic development of southern region in Tamil Nadu.

This approval was given at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Mr.Narendra Modi in New Delhi on March 10th 2026 and a communication was given to the Madurai airport authorities by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) that the cabinet committee has given its approval.

“The Madurai airport will be able to attract international airlines to operate with more choices to the travelling public and also competitive fares for international travel. This is a significant milestone to increase international traffic from and to Madurai,” Mr.P.Muthu Kumar, Airport Director, Madurai Airport, told reporters at a press meet held in the airport here today evening-March 10th 2026.

In a press statement given to media persons, he informed that night parking facility is available at Madurai airport and it will allow airlines to plan for night parking at the airport here.

“AAI has planned for proposed expansion of existing terminal building, car parking, apron and other associated city side and air side works of Madurai airport for international departures and arrivals at Madurai airport. Currently, the scope of work has been prepared. Declaring Madurai airport as an international airport will provide flexibility to airlines for flights of long haul routes, non-scheduled operators, medical flights and general aviation for efficient planning of aircraft operations, Airlines can also plan bases at Madurai airport and it is a growth story,” Mr.P.Muthu Kumar, Madurai airport director, has said in his statement to the media in Madurai on March 10th 2026.
