When you go to gym, avoid lifting heavyweights and take care of your breathing and BP: Madurai cardiologist gives advise on physical exercises

MADURAI: At a time when gym workout related deaths are being reported frequently from various places in the country, Madurai’s top cardiologist Dr.A.Mathavan has given a life-saving message to gym enthusiasts by advising them to remember that “doing an exercise is for life, and not to kill ourselves by doing unwarranted things in a gymnasium’.

He had urged the people not to do any sort of physical adventures when they go to a gym because they must bear in mind about their breathing capacity, blood pressure and heart functioning.

“The point that must be remembered when it comes to gym workouts is that exercises is for your life and health. Exercise should not lead to the person’s death. Don’t try for lifting heavyweights in gym. Try only for mild to moderate weightlifting. Do gym workouts for your longevity, let not gym shorten your life,” Dr.A.Mathavan, senior interventional cardiologist and founder of Dr.Madhavan’s Heart Centre in Madurai, has said while speaking to ‘Lotus Times’ yesterday-September 20th 2025, in his hospital situated at Sivagangai Main Road-Ring Road Pandikoil Junction in Madurai.

Urging the gym goers to follow the incidents of how deaths are taking place due to excess physical workouts, he said an important point that they should remember always is they must not hold breathing while doing workouts.

“Do not hold breathing and go for only light weights. Muscle loss must be prevented. Also, take care of breathing and high blood pressure. Youngsters must be all the more careful because in their enthusiasm for fitness, they tend to do extra things and wrong lifting of weights that do not suit their body,” Dr.A.Mathavan has said.
